“You may say I am a dreamer; I will say that I am a different drum.”
You may say I am a dreamer, but I am not the only one. There are thousands around the world, ready to respond to crises—whether they be global pandemics, wars, or conflicts. As I reflect on this homage to all humanitarians who have stayed and delivered, the words of Martin Luther King Jr. come to mind. His speech spoke of the Drum Major Instincts—a desire to lead with humility and serve others. King’s message was clear: true greatness lies in serving others with love and dedication.
Humanitarians are the frontliners, the real-life heroes who step up during emergencies. They are the first responders to crises worldwide, working alongside health workers in the wake of war, conflict, flooding, and natural disasters. From the heart of Africa to Europe and the Middle East, UN agencies and international and national NGOs are on the ground, providing food, water, shelter, and peacekeeping missions. Their work places the love of humanity at the center of their efforts.
The past few years have brought unprecedented challenges for humanitarian workers. The COVID-19 pandemic has intensified their efforts, highlighting the risks and sacrifices involved. They have continued to serve in low-income and middle-income countries, often putting their own lives at risk. Their contributions are invaluable—without their emergency services, many would go without essential needs such as food, healthcare, water, housing, medicines, and education.
2023 and 2024 have witnessed a staggering increase in the number of humanitarian deaths, the highest since the inception of the United Nations. This tragic reality underscores the immense risks faced by those dedicated to helping others. It is essential to express our deep gratitude and solidarity with these brave individuals who risk everything to provide aid in some of the world’s most dangerous and challenging environments.
As King aspired to be remembered as a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness, many humanitarians embody these ideals through their tireless efforts. They pursue justice, peace, and equality by delivering life-saving assistance and support, even amidst the most harrowing circumstances.
For all humanitarians working in these challenging times, please continue to follow WHO guidelines while delivering aid. Let us honor the memory of those we have lost and continue to support those who carry on their noble work.
I am reminded of the UNICEF rendition of “Imagine,” featuring former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a true humanitarian and a man whose efforts to make the world safer have been profound. His dedication, like that of so many others, is a reminder of the power of dreaming of a world where peace and harmony prevail.
May all those who gave their life while working as humanitarians in these last few months, rest in peace. May we all strive to uphold the spirit of love and solidarity that defines the greatest among us.
